Smythe is the preaching and writing site of Peter Smythe. Here you'll find a stout gospel, one that emphasizes the believer's identification with Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection, and life in the Spirit.

Plans, Purposes & Pursuits

Plans, Purposes & Pursuits

What are God's plans and purposes?

In 1986, Kenneth W. Hagin published a book called Plans, Purposes & Pursuits. In it he relates a vision he had of the Lord where he "began to see and understand man's plans as they related to God's plans. [He] could see that many times men had plans that were good, and even thoroughly scriptural. But they were not God's plans." If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it. You can buy it here.

In reconstituting this site and getting on with the things about the Word, my wife and I have had several discussions about our direction. Should I continue to write a blog? Should I host a forum? Should I engage in open dialogue about scripture and doctrine? After prayerful consideration, it seems good to the Holy Ghost to do none of those things but instead center on podcasts.

Frankly, this wouldn't be my first choice. Public speaking doesn't come naturally to me, and the law practice really doesn't train people to speak for more than five or ten minutes at a time. That said, I can see why podcasts appear to be the way to go. ITunes is available in 115 countries, and podcasts are free.

I looked up the top 100 Christian podcasts (yes, there is an app for that) and saw the following Full-Gospel preachers listed (they refer to themselves as Full Gospel at least):

  • T.D. Jakes
  • Joyce Meyer
  • Bill Johnson
  • Creflo Dollar
  • Joseph Prince
  • Jentezen Franklin

I can see a need for a strong Word/Spirit-centered preacher. Personally, it's hard to think that that preacher would be me. But then again, if I don't step up I don't know who will.

The first few are sure to be rough. (The Meaning of Faith took more than a couple of takes, and I'd do a few more if I had the time.) But things should get better as I get used to the routine and the equipment.

Note: We decided to scuttle the screencasts. They didn't raise enough interest for us to continue them.
